Writing is a core part of my creative practice, and my creative practice is an integral part of how I sustain my teaching.
Like a lot of kids, I got praised early and often for how well I could read and write. It came naturally, which meant I never had to think much about where it came from or what it cost me. By the time I was six or seven years into my corporate career and deep in burnout, writing was one of the things that felt furthest away from me. Something that had started as a genuine pleasure had become a tool used exclusively for labor, and somewhere in that process, I lost access to it.
Reclaiming it has been part of the same project as reclaiming my body. I believe pretty deeply that humans need to do and learn things that are designed by humans for humans. Writing, movement, music, and making things with your hands. Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung both wrote about the human need to make meaning, and I think the act of making things is inseparable from that. Some element of living a full life, for me, keeps coming back to it.
The writing collected here comes from two different chapters of that relationship. Each piece comes from a different part of my brain but is based on the same values: complex ideas deserve clear prose, and the story underneath the story we’ve already told ourselves is usually the more interesting one.
